Aesthetic Treatments and Skin of Colour: What You Should Know

Melanin-rich skin behaves differently under aesthetic treatments than lighter skin, and not every clinic is equipped to account for that. At Dezire Clinics, this is a core part of how we assess every patient.
Understanding Skin of Colour in Aesthetics
Skin with higher melanin content is more prone to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (dark or light marks left behind after inflammation or injury) and, in some cases, keloid or hypertrophic scarring. This means that treatments which are routine on lighter skin — such as certain strength peels or aggressive microneedling protocols — need to be adjusted in depth, strength, and aftercare for darker skin tones.
Why Practitioner Experience Matters
Training in aesthetic medicine does not automatically include specific training in treating skin of colour. When choosing a practitioner, it's worth asking directly about their experience with your skin tone, and looking for relevant accreditations. Our clinic is listed with the Black Skin Directory, reflecting a specific focus on safe, informed treatment for melanin-rich skin.
Considerations for Popular Treatments
Chemical peels: strength and formulation need to be matched carefully to avoid triggering pigmentation changes.
Microneedling: depth and technique are adjusted to reduce the risk of post-inflammatory marks.
Injectable treatments: technique matters more than skin tone here, but a thorough skin assessment beforehand is still important.
Laser and light-based treatments: not all wavelengths are safe for darker skin, so device selection is critical.
Aftercare for Melanin-Rich Skin
Sun protection, gentle skincare, and avoiding picking or scratching treated areas all matter more when the skin is more reactive to inflammation. Your practitioner should give you a specific aftercare plan, not a generic one.
